From 1976 to 1980,I was a member of The John Herald Band, and played venues from the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California to Carnegie Hall in New York. He then formed The Lewis Brothers, Philadelphia's premier bluegrass band, which performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival as well as hundreds of clubs throughout Philadelphia, the Northeastern US, and Europe. I have several tools that I use to get students playing music.  One of my favorite tools is the Music Flashcards made by Bastien.  Rather than teaching notes using an acronym like "every good boy deserves fudge" to teach notes, I use landmarks which get students to see the relationship between notes and allow them to read music with fluidity and ease.  I pair these flashcards with Music Tree book 1 and feel that they compliment each other very well. What I have found works best with semi-slow but significant results is the idea of 'planting seeds'. I describe this concept quite regularly with my students, and what I mean by it is that we will often talk about important musical ideas and simply make the student aware of what's happening.
