I love seeing and hearing my students get something and play it well.  It is more rewarding than any amount of money.  I encourage my students to play and perform as much as possible even if it is just in their own home.  I keep the lessons well paces but I am not afraid to go off in a different direction if it suits the student.  Music should be inspiring and should leave the student always wanting to learn more. It got tight in places (language) but it was mostly pleasure having the students' Photoshop, Flash, then make FLV video with original soundtracks. It is a basic book with specific essential elements for reading and understanding music. As the student progresses I use to introduce songs for their repertoire applying what they leaned in the book. There is nothing more I could ask for than having a student realize that when he/she walked into their first lesson, they had absolutely no idea where to even begin.. but now they can play a whole song (or even a whole album!)
