My instruction method is to assess each student's experience, ability, and goals on guitar, bass, or songwriting/composition, and tailor my instruction to the individual skill level and needs. Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing. For example, a self-taught adult that aspires to play blues or classic rock cover tunes in a "garage band" type of situation doesn't really need to spend much time if any learning to read music.
