Having had so many teachers myself, I have a very broad understanding of what makes technique work and not work. I think developing my students ears and teaching them not only how to play music, but why music is the way it is by far the most important and invaluable part of my lessons depending upon my student's goals. If a student can understand why the songs I teach them are written the way they are, and are able to identify certain structures in a song, they then have the ability to teach themselves something I haven't yet, maybe develop their own opinions on individual songs, and even write their own! I'm a music lover/performer/composer/teacher who loves spreading the joy of music. I have an Associates Degree in fine arts for Bristol Community College where I studied all aspects of performance, music history, and composition. I started teaching music when I was seventeen years old and have teaching ever since. I have spent the majority my post college years performing as a freelance drummer and guitarist for dozens of musical acts in addition to teaching privately and in class settings in Boston, San Francisco, and NYC. I believe the most important part of lessons is the student's engagement. This is achieved by understanding what they want to play and tailoring lessons around that music. When a student is engaged in the songs they are learning, they are more motivated and excited to learn. This makes it so fun to practice that they won't be able to stop! This will amplify all their skills and they will progress much faster. Read More

Having studied guitar formally for 4 years at Berklee, I pull from materials that I found most helpful to me during my own education. These include scales, chords, modes, picking patterns and even solos. Aside from fundamentals and exercises, my favorite method of teaching is asking a student what they want to learn, a song they enjoy for example, and doing my best to teach the student how to play it and why it works from a harmonic perspective. To enhance the individual's experience I use background in music, current studies, and style preference to choose which methods might be best for the student. Younger students require more stock information and techniques such as Essential Elements, Alfred's drum book, or basic Fender guitar method for example. Adults, however, can take a more personal approach. Using an array of adult methods, or simply just finding books with your favorite songs seem to work the best when helping adult students learn.
