I teach reading to all of my younger and beginner students but I like to balance that with material that is a little more enjoyable for them. I like to work with the student to settle on something from their own music collection that is at an appropriate level for them to learn. I can learn guitar parts by ear very quickly so it's easy to jump right in to whatever a student may suggest, but I also have a collection of tunes at different levels that I have had success with in the past. With older students, I try to cater the lessons to their personal needs and interests. For example, It may not seem fitting or appropriate to teach single-note reading to an older student that has no experience reading music, and who may specifically want to learn to sing and accompany their voice on an acoustic guitar. You can learn to play chords on the guitar without ever looking at a staff. That is a luxury we have with the guitar, which is something that makes it different from almost every other instrument, and in my mind, just being a "chord player" is an acceptable goal for a certain type of student. Just to clarify, I would never say that reading is not important. It is very important to people like me, as a jazz player, and I take it very seriously, as do many of my students.

My teaching style is defined by a combination of high standards, understanding, nurture and patience.  I will set realistic goals for each student based on his/her abilities.  I will encourage and try new ways to explain or demonstrate a skill that the student is having difficulty with and I will be extremely enthusiastic about their accomplishments.  However, I will assertively make it known if the student shows that they have not been practicing in a supportive way.  I give my students tips and instructions on how to practice.  Assignments are not removed from their practice list until they have been mastered.

I am an experienced musician with several thousand hours of deliberate, mindful practice in addition to extensive live performance experience. I have recording and live performance experience as a guitarist, vocalist, and bassist, along with 5 years of teaching under my belt. I am a self taught guitarist and have taken five years of voice lessons. I am a dedicated, reliable teacher who has a passion for teaching students about their selected instrument and music of all genres. In addition to guitar/singing/bass, I also play piano, drums, harmonica, and mandolin as well as various other instruments. Music is absolutely the one thing I am most passionate about in life.

For beginning students, I normally start with Alfred's Drum Method. This book works on the fundamentals of reading snare drum music and basic technique. Once the students grasps the basics on reading and playing with a metronome then we tend to move to Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (while still working on the Alfred's Method). After the student has began to play with the audio tracks and have succesfully gone through a few lessons from Groove Essentials then we begin to work on some solo repertoire and personal favorites as well.

I encourage people to do their best as well as go at their own pace. I set goals, If they exceed those goals in a week or 2 months, It doesn't matter, as long as they are trying their best. I make up games for the little ones, such as, having them to do online games involving music. For older students I try to still involve fun activities such as teaching them their favorite songs. I also, use Guitar Pro in order to teach those said songs and tab it out for them. I will either print it off or email it to them in either PDF or Guitar Pro files
