My students have ranged from pre-literate 4 year olds learning the ukulele, to the middle aged working man looking to pick the guitar back up, to the retiree looking for a new hobby. I personally really enjoy the Hal Leonard series of method books for guitar and bass. I find them comprehensive, but not bloated, and very easy to understand without being dumbed down at all. I plan to use the Guitar Method and Bass Method books, both Complete Edition (comprised of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced method books), in combination with the Hal Leonard Music Theory book, which is aimed at stringed instruments. Some students need to be immersing themselves in exercises that allow them to create and experience the music through a personal lens. Some students prefer to hone in on the technical work and theory. I became the guitar teacher at my high school, teaching beginning guitar students for the last semester of my senior year.
