ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA, Berklee College of Music, Guitar Performance, 2017;
Awards:

2016-Jimi Hendrix Award, Excellence in Guitar, Berklee College of Music

Overview:
Hello, my name is Michael and I am a recent Berklee College of Music graduate living in Chicago. I have been playing guitar since I was 10-years old. Aside from being a teacher, performer, and songwriter, I would define myself as a "guitar nerd" because I love every aspect of playing. I still practice every day and have an insatiable hunger for new opportunities to play and learn. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of metal, rock, blues, country, and guitar. In my spare time, I enjoy writing music and playing more guitar. If you want to learn multiple styles from someone who is truly passionate about the instrument, I'm your guy!
EXPERIENCE
I am a four-year Guitar Performance graduate of Berklee College of Music where I was the first rock/metal guitarist to receive the "Jimi Hendrix Award." This award is given to the best guitarist at the school. At Berklee, I received private instruction from acclaimed guitarists and teachers. I've played and studied many styles of music ranging from classical, traditional, blues, country, rock, and metal. Besides teaching, I have a passion for songwriting and performance; while in Boston, I played and recorded with the melodic metal band Black Trip. With Black Trip, I was fortunate enough to open up for such bands as Sabaton, Children of Bodom, Rhapsody of Fire, and Doro. Here in Chicago, I am currently playing with various bands and writing my own music.
METHODS USED
I have experience teaching from the beginner to the collegiate level. I teach technique, songwriting, theory lessons, or any style the student prefers. Each lesson is specifically tailored to a student's individual needs and musical desires. I teach an effective practice routine involving a metronome and egg timer to promote good habits. This serves a dual purpose in measuring both time and technical progress. Further, it gives beginner students the ability to develop good habits early. My ultimate goal is for students of all levels to foster a sense of accomplishment through learning and to realize that no matter your progress, you are always a student of the instrument. Not to mention, guitar is fun!
LESSON STYLE
I have a very hands-on teaching style. My style is very "goal-oriented," and I will teach students to set short-term goals, medium goals, and then demonstrate to them how reaching the short and medium-term goals leads to accomplishing long-term goals. This system allows students to remain motivated and track their progress as efficiently as possible. As a visual learner, I find it's extremely beneficial to teach shapes and how they can be manipulated to better serve a musical purpose along with the theory behind the shapes themselves. For example, how changing one note in a scale can create a completely different musical environment. It is my goal every lesson to inspire the student by allowing the student to understand not only the concept but also see how to manipulate the concept. I envision teaching much like my teachings at Berklee where once my lesson was finished, I only wanted to go home and learn more.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
