I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. For beginners, I start with chord study. I like to incorporate teaching songs the student is interested in. This keeps students engaged and gives them something they'll look forward to practice. Once a basic understanding of chords is achieved, I move on the notes on the fretboard and music patterns and intervals to help gain an understanding of how the guitar works. Then we move on to the CAGED system along with scales and modes, all the while teaching the student songs they pick that incorporate the techniques they are learning, I'm order to keep them engaged and give them something to share and mark their progress. It's all about having a clear goal in mind and working towards it: we'll have conversations about objectives and musical preferences (classical? jazz? rock and pop?) and then develop goals based on those preferences (playing live? what kind of pieces/songs?).
