For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun. I like to tailor my lessons towards the styles that the student is interested, while also teaching about music theory, reading, and any music history that is relevant to the students' interests. For rock and pop music, I find that there are a wealth of songbooks available. For students interested in classical guitar, I like using Christopher Parkening's guitar method; it contains a great deal of useful information and diagrams, as well as a great selection of beginner pieces. I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. I have a variety of method books in different styles and from different time periods, and will select, assign, and provide a Method book to a student based on the student's goals. Read More

I began teaching private lessons during college but I have always shown people how to play instruments my entire career. I have always had a knack for both learning music and teaching it. One thing my students would say about me is that I am patient. Everyone learns in a different way and there is not one way to teach someone to play a song or read a sheet. Initially I learned by ear but my journey has lead me to advance my playing through non traditional routes such as learning from others along the way, reading sheet music and watching lessons online. My passion for sharing knowledge begin during my time as high school tuba section leader, which led to Senior band president. Assisting my peers so we could sound better via musical corrections, this would build our confidence levels and the moral throughout the ensemble. I furthered my passion for music at Berklee College of Music, where I studied various aspects, methods, and approaches to educating someone about the art of music. Read More
