I have taught from both the FJH and Berklee series of guitar and theory books. My lessons revolve around three parts: 1- Lessons from books of the appropriate level. We choose a book that suits the student, and there are weekly assignments from the book. 2- Theory work, usually focusing on the Blues form. Ill have flute/guitar students learn current hits that they love and use them to teach improvisation. It all depends on the student. I teach songwriting. To that end, I may have the student come up with a hook, write a poem, or even an idea for a song about something that is meaningful to them. Regarding musical repertoire, I emphasize a diverse and enjoyable repertoire especially for guitar ensemble and group classes. I tend to introduce my students to different cultures and wider musical experience by playing and practicing works composed by composers from around the world and even arranging traditional music of variety of cultures.
