I enrolled as a guitar performance music major learning classical guitar with Mark Bentley of Kansas City. I soon began to teach guitar lessons and loved the opportunity to share with students the simple things of making music. I changed my major to music education and took about every music class Missouri Western offered. I became a public school elementary vocal music teacher in Kansas City, Kansas. I went on to get a Masters degree in Education Leadership with an emphasis in elementary education. Read More

I employ the use of scales and harmonizing techniques if so desired, but mainly focus on what the student would like to be able to accomplish in his or her time with me. I like to let them pursue their own directions while overseeing that they learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen genre or genres. Learning and especially music should maintain FUN as a central priority, because without excitement over the topic and enthusiasm in development, it becomes easy to get bored and walk away from the activities. I've been slowly teaching private lessons while I've been in the final years of college. With the KU curriculum, I have had to learn how to work with children from Pre-K to 12th grade, which means any age is something I've been prepared for. Also, I got to sing with the Intergenerational choir at KU, which would happen at the local community center with senior-aged people. I've sung jazz, musical theater, and classical pieces since high school. Read More

I began teaching lessons while in high school to friends and other students of varying ages. Having taught in several music shops, I currently teach students from my house or in their own homes, which is why Musika was an attractive company for me. My background in music and teaching spans a diverse set of styles, and I try to encourage students to broaden their musical horizons by introducing them to music they may not have otherwise heard. Hi there! Teaching guitar is my passion. Having played guitar for almost 20 years (!), I'm eager to pass along what I've learned and push students to develop their own love for the instrument. I started playing guitar when I was 7 years old, taking private lessons with my older brother (the local music school had a 2 for 1 deal!). After several years, my brother decided it wasn't for him, but I had fallen completely in love with guitar and music in general. Read More

I enjoy using popular method books designed to help develop technique at the student's specific level. I also particularly enjoy creating my own exercises that may be more beneficial to a student's specific technique development. Being a bass/rhythm guitarist, I place a lot of value on tempo and rhythm accuracy, and other key elements to being able to play successfully with others. I believe technique development to be of vital importance and approach it on a student by student basis - no two students have exactly the same lesson plan! Read More

I have used several curricula and books by Mel Bay, Alfred, Hal Leonard and others. But in the last 15 years I have developed and used mostly my own books and recordings which are very thorough. I started developing this curriculum out of necessity because there was no one book that helped my students from a beginner phase all the way through intermediate and advanced levels in guitar playing. I incorporate both music fundamentals in note reading with basic guitar friendly concepts in chording up to advanced open chords. Read More
