I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, or draft up my own exercises. I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs. I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique. I also teach songs that the student would like to learn. I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning. The most important people in my life have always been my teachers. Teachers in my life have been to thank for my greatest triumphs and to no one else do I owe such a great debt. However, careless teachers have driven many students away from a musical life, and left indelible scars on others. Thus, it is with the greatest respect and acknowledgment of responsibility that I approach my teaching style. Read More

I began teaching private lessons back in undergrad. I found that I really enjoy getting to know someone one-on-one, and I think I'm particularly effective at figuring out how to communicate knowledge, create art and inspire on that level! The experience of my students has run the gamut; I've taught 5-year old and 65-year old beginners, I've taught students who already have an undergrad degree in music. I have taught people who are actively performing, and expectant mothers who want to sing lullabies to their babies. Read More

My teaching style is to move comfortably and systematically: I introduce a concept, the student attempts it, I offer corrections if needed and lots of affirmation. I also make adjustments according to the student's learning style. It's important to me to convey how and why things work--*why* are we playing these chords, *what colors* do these particular notes add, etc.--so that the student can eventually go on to play their favorite songs with greater appreciation, and if they are interested in songwriting, eventually write their own songs more effectively. I've found that after the preliminary work of getting a base skill set and familiarity with the instrument, technically proficiency, etc, it helps to let the student guide me in how i aid them on their journey and find where their passion is, in the great world of music. The most rewarding thing that can happen as a teacher is to see a student develop their own musicality and achieve their personal goals. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days ,as I began teaching in professional music school full time 28 years ago and have been consistently teaching students in my home for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key point .I like to emphasize for younger students ,as it tends to help student progress and gain passion for the instrument. I've also found that combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
