I believe strongly that passion is infectious, and is key to my teaching. I ask all of my student to set realistic goals and treat our progress as a journey in which we will gradually pick up the skills to grow with steady work. This comes from enjoying the “artistic process” and can only be discovered when we move together at a pace that is comfortable for the student. The only requirement I have for any budding musicians is that we both be open-minded and willing to listen using our ears and mind (this goes for me too!). Read More

My teaching style matches the personality of the student. I can vary my lesson from high energy to calm and sensitive. As an previous elementary school music teacher to 3000 students, I have the ability to read a student and find the most effective way to teach immediately. When it is appropriate, I enjoy teaching in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education, which means making music through movement, speech, play, and creativity. Read More

I find that this book covers all essential factors of flute playing, including tone, range, tonguing, and posture. I also have a varied collection of etude books that I like to select from, as a good source of technical and expressive exercises. For adults who are beginners, I might refer to the Accent on Achievement books, but only as much as we need. I believe the traditional and classical pieces are very practical for learning flute technique, for students of all ages. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I rose to become section leader of the clarinet section in band and section leader of the alto section in choir. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons to students of all different ages and skill levels, as well as individuals with disabilities. Encouraging practice schedules and routine is something I like to emphasize in younger students. I aim to bring my students individual musical interests into our class as that tends to keep them more engaged. Read More

After graduating from college, I began teaching privately in my home state of Texas at the middle and high school levels in New Braunfels and Austin. Soon, I began teaching adults as well and when I moved to Washington D.C. in fall of 2006, I became the Music Instructor at The Art and Drama Therapy Institute, a center for adults with developmental disabilities. This experience had a great impact on me in terms of understanding the big picture in that the goals and methods relating to the technical aspects of music lessons, but the grand value that music offers in terms of the emotional and spiritual rewards as well. My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the light in my students eyes in those "aha" moments when simple suggestions open up new possibilities of technique and musical expression. I offer both Suzuki and traditional style lessons. I believe lessons should be both challenging and fun and seek to find the right balance for each student. It is my job as a teacher to find out how each of my students learn and what inspires them. Read More

For the past 5 years, I have actively taught private lessons for saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano for students of all ages. I have found that no matter the age, experience, or instrument, that teaching music is ultimately about discovering and cultivating inspiration. I truly believe every person has something in music that they want to express, and I want to help them find and expand upon it. I think it is crucial to focus on technique and musical fundamentals.
