Because I feel like you can't learn technique without musicality, I think it is important to begin with that in mind and apply the skills we learn in the method book to the piece and visa versa. Some of my favorites are the Trevor Wye: A Beginner's Book of the Flute (there are 4 volumes), as well as the succession of Louis Moyse Flute Series beginning with Forty Little Pieces (these are in progressive order). I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. For beginners and younger students, I typically start with the Trevor Wye Beginner Method books or the Flute Student method book by Douglas Steensland. More intermediate students I will start out with the Rubank Method books. All of these books are tailored towards flute specifically, and have fairly comprehensive and progressive exercises that are very effective. I like to start out with a method book, and I can supplement with other materials to bet fit the needs of the student. Read More

For beginning kids, I usually start with three or four major scales and a couple of other basic routines to improve their knowledge of the notes and their tone. One book I like to use is Carl Fischer'sFlute 101: Mastering the Basics.Once the student seems to have made progress in these areas, I introduce them to one very simple melody from a well known song, such as O Christmas Tree or Fur Elise. I want each lesson to be exciting and productive for each student. I have different methods for each student's particular needs and desires, but the primary goal is that the student has fun and enjoys their lessons. For students who would like to learn classical music I have extensive training in repertoire. I also play duets with students, and play along with recordings. I this helps students to learn skills like intonation and sight reading, but primarily they are just really fun! Read More

Throughout my musical training, my teachers have not only taught me about playing music but theyve each become my mentors and role-models. I strive to follow this example and impart the profound role that music plays throughout history and in our daily lives. We set goals together based on what each student wants to achieve and I provide the guidance to help reach that goal whilst opening their eyes to the next step and the next step. Read More
