My teaching experience began in my early years of college, as I began teaching private lessons part time two years ago, and have been consistently teaching students online and in person since then. I view music lessons as a vital part of a student's all-around education. Music is to be learned just like a language, we have to understand what we are doing in order to actually do it! My lessons are based around teaching fundamentals (technique, posture, embouchure), musicality, and good practice habits that students can use when they move on in their musical endeavors. Read More

I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. In high school and college I learned a bit of jazz as well. I have an aunt who is a professional opera singer, and when I was a young adult in my 20s I decided to take voice lessons from her... hence the journey towards finding my true voice! I worked with her for several years to get in touch with the musical voice that had always been hiding inside me, and learned to listen to that. Read More

I believe that music is a gift to humanity. A person may be more or less "talented," but that isn't important to their enjoyment of music. I have a passion for music, having devoted my working life to it, and I can't help but convey and share that. I help students play as well as they can but even more important, listen to and enjoy what they are playing and hearing. Read More

I love seeing a student gain an understanding of a concept that had been challenging. In order to accomplish this "aha" moment, I try to learn how the student learns best (visual aids, explanations, listening examples) and use that to help the student. I use popular songs that the student knows to explain concepts that can be challenging. I use stickers for younger students to help mark progress and practice journals for older students to help see how much was accomplished. Read More

For elementary students, I usually have them work out of Standard of Excellence books or Rubank Elementary method books and supplement them with fun popular music they enjoy to play. For middle school and high school students, I encourage them to work on appropriate solos, scales, and duets we can play together. For adult students, I typically ask them about their musical goals and interests so that we can make a plan that they’re excited about! Read More
