I heavily focus on tone and fundamentals, so applying it to the music comes seamlessly. For tone, I like both Phillip Bernold books, on embouchure and sound. Sonorite by Moyse as well. Once the student has demonstrated a sufficient grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire, always gauging their level so that I can provide them with a challenging and rewarding experience. For adults and intermediate to advanced flutists, I try to get sense for the student's level and how they are interested in growing, and tailor my methods and repertoire selections to that. For beginning students, we begin with learning how to read music and go over the basic fundamentals of playing the instrument. Then, we will go through the Rubank Elementary Methods books while including scales and practice techniques. We will also take time to listen to other instrumentalists and discover what concept of sound is best for you. I have been teaching guitar, electric bass, and woodwinds for over 30 years.  I have a Bachelor of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University.  I have performed all over the Chicago area in a variety of Rock, Americana, Country, Folk, Blues, and Celtic ensembles.  I write original songs and compose music for dance and film. Teaching is something I have always felt passionately about. I first started teaching at the age of 14, teaching martial arts to young kids nearly every day at my stepfather’s martial arts school. As I grew up and began taking music more seriously, teaching remained an important part of my life: as clarinet section leader in the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band in Hawaii, I was responsible for administering weekly lessons to other clarinet players in the band, and I also worked with several school music programs in Hawaii, developing and leading masterclasses for K-12 students.
