I always begin a lesson with a warm up. This can look different depending on the student, however I emphasize the importance of warming up your lungs, fingers, embouchure, and body. I then move to scales. For my beginner students, I use methods to learn the quick fingerings that is needed for basic fundamentals as well as exercises that assist in how we blow into the flute. Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. For younger students (under eight years old) I usually use the Alfred all in one book.. for older children, I use the Bastian set of four books: piano performance, technic and theory. How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. First I will assess each individual student based on their own skill level and requirements. In each lesson we will work on fundamentals of flute techniques, whether that is posture, embouchure, and/or finger techniques. In each of these lessons I hope to instill knowledge of music theory and history. We will learn many different styles of music ranging from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century flute music.
