I have recently again started playing after many years. I have played in a the pit band at the Count Basie Theater for Jesus Christ Superstar, and Into the Woods for a Wagner College and Brookdale Community College productions. I have been sitting in on local jam sessions with very favorable feedback. I played at a performance at Brookdale Community College with a group, Hot Air. Enjoyment, hearing pitch and rhythm by vocalizing, and developing a register appropriate and flexible embrochure, and using harmonics to tone match are some of the techniques and strategies I would emphasize for flute specific instruction. In college I began my teaching career. I started teaching private lessons, band classes, and General Music classes. I continue to teach currently as well. Teaching music is truly my passion! Through my teaching I want to spark a passion for music in my students. It is important to me that my students truly enjoy learning music. My teaching style is one of flexibility, but still with expectations. I cater specifically to the needs of the student, and choose repertoire and exercises that will fit with their needs. I encourage positive self-assessments and self talk, and strongly believe that progress is based on collaborative efforts of the student and teacher. My teaching is very student-driven. I try to keep the students interests as a primary goal in keeping their interest level and so that they can progress in a musical situation. When they are interested in what they are learning, they strive for success. I try to acknowledge their successes and accomplishments which helps keep them learning and wanting to learn more. The best way to learn music is to teach it effectively, and I ALWAYS am learning from my students in a variety of ways, whether it be a new group that I'm not familiar with, or another style or genre that is new and fresh. Every new student comes to their first lesson with particular skills and musical interests. My job is to assess the students abilities and lead them down the appropriate paths to achieving their musical goals. My goal is to cultivate musicianship.  Students are encouraged to develop technical skills as a means of creative and emotional expression.  Sight reading and improvisation are taught simultaneously with music theory and composition.
