I have been in Chicago for almost 15 years, started studying flute in Costa Rica when I was 12y/o. I speak English, Spanish and Portuguese and love cultures, languages, and music from everywhere. I have a Masters degree in Flute performance and a Post Masters that specializes in Orchestral Playing, I enjoy playing anything from Brazilian Choros to Mahler and flute concerti. I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" teaching method, which means that I do not utilize the same teaching method with every student. I realize that each student is a unique individual with different learning preferences. With each student, I design a different approach that caters to the student's needs. I began teaching flute 10 years ago and successfully ran a private flute studio out of my home, which incldued students of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds. I encourage regular practice, instrument maintenance, and practice journaling for my beginning students, which helps to promote progress and enjoyment of music making. Since these students moved a lot, I would continue teaching out of the books they were currently using to keep they're progress consistent. I use humor and my own experiences to first establish a caring environment in which the student can be comfortable. Once that connection is established, I like to find out the students interests and make sure a personal goal is set that we can achieve together. There has to be something exciting the student can achieve in order to develop self-motivation.
