I am a recent graduate from Kutztown University where I studied Commercial Music with minors in Jazz, Music History and Audio Engineering. I am a saxophone player primarily, and have experience playing and teaching all 4 major saxophones. I also have studied and taught flute and clarinet for over 4 years now. I have extensive performance experience from marching band to musical pit orchestras to pop bands at amusement parks. I specialize in classical, jazz and can teach very beginners to more advanced students. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Saxophone Flute Recorder Piccolo Music
For Beginner students I have them start with the recorder. The instrument allows for a smooth segue to the flute being that the student can see their fingers and the recorder does not require the same air speed and lung capacity that the flute does so the student can pace themselves. For intermediate or advanced students I will go through orchestral excerpts, etudes, or technical studies with them. I follow the same model with my adult students, if they are just starting out I will recommend beginning on recorder to solidify fingerings however the mental and physical capacity of an adult versus a young child are very different. Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
My teaching method is different for every student based on age, level, and their musical goals. However, the two things that I try to keep consistent among all of my students is a solid technical foundation and curiosity for different musical styles. For beginners, I typically start with the Rubank Beginner or Intermediate method book. Once the student has progressed to grasp the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce etudes and solo repertoire along with any pop or jazz songs they might want to learn. Read More
Instruments: Flute
I want all my students to have a strong foundation of technique and theory, so I have all my students wok on scales and scale patterns. For a students solo repertoire, I will give all my students lots of choices. I use collections such as Forty Little Pieces for Beginner Flutists (Louis Moyse) for beginners, 24 Short Concert Pieces (Hal Leonard) for intermediate, but I also have my own supplemental repertoire list with music for all levels (especially more advanced). Instruments: Saxophone Flute
For younger students, I find that book based methods are very helpful, and typically I go through the Hal Leonard Essential Elements Series. Once the student has a firm handle of the basics of saxophone (fingerings, embouchure, dynamics, etc.) then I start having them read etude books, and prepare pieces for recitals and other performances or auditions. For adults, I like to teach based on a goal oriented program. For example, If I have a student who is only interested in learning the saxophone for the sake of playing "Yakety Sax" or "The Pink Panther Theme", then I will tailor the lesson plan towards learning that while still working on the fundamentals of Saxophone along the way.
