I believe in a warm-up for all instruments, so each lesson will start with one (scales, long tones, etc.) For flute, I often start with either the book that comes with the rental book, old band books, etc. then I venture off into etude books, long tone books, and solos that promote individual development. After I assess the ability level, I find level-appropriate method books, scale studies, etudes, tone exercises, sight reading, and solo repertoire. I use method books that I am personally familiar with and like, but am open to looking for new, exciting options. For adults, I would continue using these books but at a higher level with supplemental material on the side, which may include solo repertoire appropriate for them and Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist exercises (a few, not all). As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music. If my students do not leave every lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and wanting to practice and play music, then I am not doing my job.
