In addition, for those who are in school band, I highly recommend they bring in their materials at the beginning and have a lesson or two on them, especially if they have any solos or auditions pending. I began teaching as a young kid in middle and high school. I would give informal lessons to my peers, and this is what started my interest in teaching. I continued this path teaching classical flute and jazz improvisation to anyone who would listen to me! In college, I worked with the saxophone players in the jazz department helping them develop their flute sound as a doubles instrument. My beginning students learn the fundamentals of their instrument. I want every student to get a well rounded education from me. Woodwinds students study from Essential Elements. Young piano students use the Faber collection and older students use the Bastien series for the Older Beginner. Practical Theory from Sandy Feldstein is used for instrumental students. I have performed all across the state of Pennsylvania, in Connecticut, New York, Delaware, and as far away as Italy.
