I began teaching while in college and have now been teaching for 11 years.  My students have ranged in age from 3-60.  Since getting my Suzuki Flute certification in 2008,  I have found the Suzuki method a great way to start young beginners.  In addition to giving private lessons, I taught group flute classes for 3 years with the Harmony Program  My students are encouraged to participate in ensembles, competitions and recitals as having such goals is a great motivation for practice and musical growth. My teaching process looks like a mountain stream. We start at the top of the mountain, and the goal is to get to the bottom. As I teach using my tried and true techniques, we make our way down, but when I notice that my student needs extra help, or should be pushed more, we detour into another stream until we can return to our main path. I like to get to know my students before real in depth work can begin. Why are you interested in music? Why flute specifically? What other activites interest you? etc. I ask these questions so that analogies can be made to show how most things apply to all interests. Practice techniques in sports are similar to those in music for example. Knowing a student's personality outside of music also helps when setting goals, such as what to work on specifically in each lesson, what they are working towards in their own practice, and what future plans they have for music. I hold two Undergraduate Degrees from Bard College (flute and dance) and a Master's Degree in Flute Performance from Queens College. For beginning students I typically start with Hannon and my own finger exercises. I ask the the student to draw notes on a staff so they can get familiar with reading and composing music.
