I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. In addition to running a thriving private studio, I have served as Associate Instructor of Flute at Indiana University during my graduate studies and as a Guest Artist at the Denver School of the Arts. I am currently enrolled at the University of Northern Colorado for a Doctor of Arts in Saxophone Performance with an emphasis in Jazz Pedagogy. I have performed in such venues as The Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, The Texas Jazz Festival, the JEN Conference in Dallas, Texas, and the New Orleans Reggae Festival. I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with.
