I traversed conflict-countries carrying only my flute, I was welcomed to cities and performed alongside renowned musicians in places like Havana, Seattle, Ramallah and Beijing. For beginning students in flute and piano, I use Trevor Wye flute books and Alfred piano books, respectively. These books cover fundamentals and hand technique and once that is learned and internalized, then I will introduce more solo or accompanied repertoire that they would eventually perform in a recital. For beginning composition students (which are taught remotely on Zoom), I will go over different "lectures" about fundamental music theory and integrate short composition assignments that go according to what was learned in the lesson. I then worked at several band programs in the Austin area, teaching private lessons and sectionals, while I was pursuing my master's degree. To me, music has always been an emotional outlet, so while I do place a large emphasis on having the fundamental skills necessary for performance, I also really value and emphasize musicality. I want students to feel like learning the flute is accessible, and I love seeing them progress at their own pace. I also want students to have ownership of their learning process – if there are songs/skills that they'd like to learn, I'd love to work with them to figure out how they can achieve those goals.
