I began to play music at age 9. My mom gave my sister a x22number keyboardx22 with x22number music booksx22 for Christmas but she never touched it. I grew curious and approached the keyboard and after quickly deciphering how the numbers system worked burned the entire book in two months enabling myself to play pretty advanced songs. After a few years, I became fascinated with James Brown's music and that's when I knew I wanted to experiment with drums. For beginning students, I normally start with Alfred's Drum Method. This book works on the fundamentals of reading snare drum music and basic technique. Once the students grasps the basics on reading and playing with a metronome then we tend to move to Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (while still working on the Alfred's Method). After the student has began to play with the audio tracks and have succesfully gone through a few lessons from Groove Essentials then we begin to work on some solo repertoire and personal favorites as well. I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself. The student and teacher must work together to define their goals, be comfortable confronting shortcomings, discover how they learn best, and find the patience and drive to practice for long enough to get better. I've discovered over the years that every student is different and require a custom approach tailored to what method works best for them. Some students do very well working through publications of lesson books, while others seem to do better with a less structured approach driven more by listening and muscle memory. In both methods, I find it important to lead by example, not only to be able to show them correctly, but also to inspire them. Read More

For beginning piano students, I often get them started with the Faber piano series, then incorporate music theory along with their song requests. For beginning fretted string students (guitar/bass/ukelele), I like to start with the Hal Leonard method book to get started with reading notation, so that we cover more than just tabs and chords. For drum/percussion students, I'll have them start with a combination of Syncopation by Ted Reed and Peter Erksine's Drumset Essentials Volume 1. Read More

As he gets more comfortable, I would then teach him the drum rudiment fundamentals in order to execute and improvise the students own ideas. For my more advanced students, I aid to point them in the right direction depending what they would want to improve on.These teachings could be how to read and interpret drum charts and lead sheets, as well as snare books such as Stick Control and Wilcoxon-All American Drummer. I guess my point is, I can play any instrument and if I had more time in the world, I could practice more. I took all of the music classes in my college and I passed with flying colors (except brown because he has a broken wing so he can't fly that much, but other colors flew high). I even took Opera and passed that with an A. I love all kinds of music and I am willing to teach any kind of music to my students. Read More
