My school couldn't afford to fund faculty to lead the drumline, so during my junior and senior years, I took on the role of teaching new students, some of whom had never even held a drumstick, to be performance-ready in a short amount of time. During my time as an undergrad student I taught percussion and basic piano lessons in the local area. I am an active percussionist currently based in the San Fernando Valley, but my passion for music has brought me all over the world. After earning a Bachelors degree in Percussion Performance from Humboldt State University under Dr. Eugene Novotney, I continued my musical studies at the University of Ghana in West Africa, and have since been to 21 different countries in search of exotic sounds and rhythms. My students see me repeatedly for years and they know that I only ask them to do their best, and they recognize when they fall short. I talk to my kids like adults, and they respond maturely. They are aware that I have my own drumming goals and that their progress is NOT the absolute most important thing on my list. This keeps them motivated. My lessons are more demanding then other teachers, and although my methods seem tough, I am constantly surprised of the many invitations I get to my students' performances, plays, sports games, birthday parties, thanksgiving dinners, etc. Read More

When teaching my students, my lessons are relaxed and informal, with a focus on building basic knowledge that will be applicable throughout the musical journey- however, I also pride myself in helping my students enjoy music as well, and have the capabilities to record their playing. This not only builds confidence but is an invaluable source of feedback that I find is often overlooked. As early as possible, I try to have my students play along to either a cover song or play along with me, in order to develop skills on the instrument that are practical, meaningful, and fun.
