For beginning students, I like to stress fundamentals with a twist. I encourage my students to play along with music they like to keep them interested in what they are practicing. As the student progresses, I will either compose a short solo or provide a short solo in which they can apply fundamentals to. For intermediate and more advanced students, I like to let them guide their own instruction. After coming to me with topics they'd like to learn more about, I will provide exercises, musical examples, and pieces to help them assimilate what they have learned with me, to real-world examples. I try to keep lessons fun even though there's aspects that might be boring. So, I will switch from snare drum to drum set. Learning how to combine rudiments with drum set music such as jazz and rock is very beneficial. When my students are having trouble with a certain area, I do well with taking out that area and making a drill out of it. One of my specialties is that I will play the bass with students for various styles so they can have a hands on experience of the relationship of a rhythm section, phrasing, and timing. Read More

I have performed and toured regionally and nationally with a variety of artists including George Maurer, Mick Sterling, Rich Trueman, and The Memories. I have also opened shows for many recognized national artists such as Joe Satriani, The Buckinghams, Edgar Winter, Alabama, and many others. I encourage individual practice and also strongly encourage formation of groups with other musicians to share ideas, understand dynamics of playing together and fundamentals of time. Read More

I encourage my students to participate with playing in live venues and support them by going out to music venues or concerts that they are performing at. I love performing and teaching. These are my twin passions--my calling, if you will. I stay active doing and improving both of these areas. I also have a broad range of musical interests and knowledge that I bring to every lesson, as well as to every performance. I can play and teach reggae music, for example, but I also provide a history and cultural context of the style--information that leads to better, more authentic performances. Read More

A beginner private lesson will usually begin with wrist and finger exercises that establish technical foundation for exploring other rudiments. Secondly, teaching music notation. The four basic ways to divide the pulse and how they are notated. Third, 3 way co-ordination. Use of one foot and hands together. (Usually beginning and intermediate rock beats) Lastly, Application of all of the above to a musical situation. For intermediate and advanced students fundamental technique is still and will always be a part of how to better control and co-ordinate hands and feet. Read More
