As such I have developed to spend the better part of the last 28 years recording and performing as a drummer. I am most experienced in the rock, hard rock and metal genres but consistently study and develop a variety of basic to advanced drum set patterns, techniques and fills. I have been teaching drums for 3 years and have found that teaching book work, but keeping it light and fun is a great way to keep students engaged and motivated. If the student isn't having fun then I am not doing my job. I both play and teach many different styles and can give advice on drum kits and cymbals, sticks, tuning and more. My teaching experience dates back to showing simple rock grooves to the kids at my fathers church. I had very little knowledge about music back then but I knew from early on that I had a niche for teaching. During my time at Rutgers University I was priveleged enough to work for the Rutgers Extension Division which specializes in different lesson and summer programs. Through the Extension Division I was able to gain experience as a counselor, working with children ages 6-18, and also as a substitute drum instuctor. Read More

I use different methods for students over 12 years of age and younger students. For the first group I base my teaching on Alan Dawson and Gary Chester style systems using variations for the students level and needs. For the second group I like using a Bobby Deitch method adding a play along list.. For both group , according to the musical needs of the student I might add some of my original material, some transcriptions, Wilcoxin Snare Drum Solo's, materials from Stick Control and Syncopation books. My teaching style relies heavily upon training the ear to dissect what it is hearing. Developing the ear is crucial to being a self-reliant musician. In drums, the visualization how a rhythm works in time is essential to being able to perform that rhythm. Dissection and mapping are the key to furthering one's abilities on the drum kit. In guitar or in piano, being able to isolate frequencies with your ear will lead you to a more accurate understanding for chord structures and progressions than simply looking up tabs, which are often deeply flawed.
