For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band.
