I use all types of books including Syncopation, Stick Control, New Breed, Advanced Funk Studies. Also I like to use other media where possible to teach different styles. Once the beginning student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce more musical applications related to real music. Preferably music the student is interested to learn to play. As far as drumming goes, I believe in the same tenets that were taught to me; start with the basics and core and work your way up. For drums that means rudiments, stick technique and snare basics (books like "Stick Control" -George Stone). But lessons are not a slow grind that maybe one day build up to a full drum set. I was taught (and teach) in a way which mainly focuses first on these essentials (reading, technique etc.), but also incorporates the rest of the drum-set and playing along with other instruments and music. I teach 4-way independence (this means all 4 limbs) so students can move freely around the drum set. With this independence, students are able to play any style of music including Rock, Blues, Gospel, Latin, Jazz, Hip Hop, Electronic, and World. I incorporate a remarkable practice drumstick known as the HingeStix into the lesson plan that builds muscle memory to master the loose grip, the bounce, and the rebound.
