Yes for teaching piano I use Nancy and Randall Faber's books. I have used all of them. For guitar and mandolin I generally do not use a "book". As the lessons progress I might introduce a book if that is what is called for. All orchestral instruments call for the structure of a book and I augment that with my own explanations. This is true for all ages of learners. Read More

My method in teaching depends on the instrument and the age. For beginners on band instruments and piano, I would start them with a method book of their choosing (though I would steer them in a good direction). For guitar and drumset, the use of method books is fine...but this would not be my first approach. It is important for students to be familiar and fluent in music notation. Read More

Through the foundation I've gained by the influences of Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and Suzuki musical instruction methods, I compile my own teaching materials. Using personally constructed guitar lessons, I demonstrate, instruct, and guide the student based on my assessment of their individual needs, skill level, and progress. Lessons are formulated in Modules, and advancement through them is based on the student's personal aptitude, skill level, and practice commitment. Learning is accomplished by ear as well as through essential methods of musical notation (tablature, 5-line staff, rhythmic comprehension). Read More

The first thing a teacher must do is figure out how to motivate a student to practice. This can be done differently for different students. I will list some things that I have found that work. 1) Set a practice schedule/timer/alarm 2) I work on mindset and practice techniques to reduce practice session frustration/anxiety and increase positivity and feel good emotions 3) The student selects songs to practice in addition to scales, lesson book or repertoire 4) Parental support and priority 5) Listening to music outside of lesson 6) Practice one concept at a time 7) Limit faster passages to smaller groups of notes, practice slow with different patterns. 8) more in lesson!....... Again, music is a deeply personal subject and I want to encourage every student to find their unique voice and love for music. My goal is to develop strong all-around music skills along with learning the technique of the instrument they chose. Every student works at a different pace, and I plan accordingly. I like to set reachable, realistic goals for students each week to develop a strong sense of accomplishment and hunger to learn more the following week. Read More
