My method when teaching students that are starters (kids) i used books like teaching little fingers to play piano and john Thompson which introduce learning of notes, their instrument, posture, and rhythm. Most of these books are in sets and will take the student to an advanced bigger player! From here I incorporate a method of learning at least 3-4 pieces ( A piece that has mostly a melodic line, a piece that concerns more of rhythmic exercises and then to a last piece which is a study) i will also top it up with scales and arpeggios and also a sense of knowing your instrument overall, listening , Aural and also incorporate sight reading . I try to keep the students engaged by finding a balance of what the students want to work on, as well as what I want them to be working on. I understand that every student learns differently, and I won't teach every student the same way. I will give the students goals to reach every week, so they can see the progress themselves, and I always ensure to acknowledge when a student has succeeded with something that was assigned to them. I first began teaching while still completing my Bachelors degree at William Paterson in 2011. Most of my students were beginning level piano students, but I had a few more advanced students as well as some people studying saxophone with me. My teaching philosophy is to combine teaching the technique of an instrument with learning songs as well as theory and improvisation/composition. Everyone learns technique, but learning music that I wanted to learn, learning how those songs were written (theory), and eventually elaborating on those songs (improvisation), and writing my own music (composition), was what really got me deeply engaged in the act of practicing and making music, and I have found over several years of teaching that it keeps my students engaged and enjoying the learning process.
