For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music. From here, I can take that information and use it to form a plan and we can address fundamentals or skills that need to be worked on. I firmly believe that fundamentals are incredibly important to playing the instrument at the highest level. For all experience levels, long tones are essential to a good playing foundation. Making long tones a regular part of daily practice is key to developing a strong sound and extended lung capacity. Beginners focus on embouchure, hand position, correct fingerings, note reading, and basic rhythms. Intermediate and advanced players work on learning major and minor scales, etude studies and a variety of solo clarinet repertoire.
