I set realistic goals for each student, and I encourage each student to practice to meet their goals each week. I also make myself available to all students at anytime for questions during their practice. I have a system of teaching jazz improvisation that ensures that every student can play and read changes. I take all of the bad habits away from each student to promote healthy performing habits. Read More

We like lessons to be fun and challenging. Sight reading abilities really help musicality and ability for spontaneity. Part of each lesson is spent on good posture, breathing and excellent practice methods. We slow down the difficult passages and get them played correctly. Attention to tone and a great armbiture are always kept in mind, as well as hand position and minimal movement as the songs and exercises are played. Read More

I am a University of North Texas graduate. I studied with Jim Riggs and Dr. Eric Nestler and played in the top lab bands and classical ensembles while attending school. I later moved to NYC where I started my professional playing career. I lived there for 14 years playing with several music ensembles and studied with Bill Blount on clarinet and Lorrie Glaze on piano. I played on Broadway musicals like Avenue Q and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Read More

I never assume a student cannot succeed. Progress comes quickly with a variety of songs supported by successive exercises and methodology. Parental involvement is highly recommended and I try to work with parents to determine motivational techniques. I have found that students need a regular practice time 4 to 5 times a week, even if it is only a few minutes at a time; but, hopefully, we can find music that they like to sit down and play. I was a full time public school band director for four years, and have taught all the way to the college level and adults, teaching classes in jazz studies and private lessons on saxophone. I've done woodwind coaching as well as private teaching since 1985. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More
