I encourage my students to practice at least an hour a day, this can be done in ten minute intervals or whatever amount of time the student can maintain focus. I was still taking private lessons at the time; as my skill level advanced, my teacher saw my potential as a teacher and started referring some beginning students to me. Throughout college, I gained experience working with youth and adult students of all levels. I have a set methodology that is flexible enough to cater to each individual student. We learn exercises for basic technique, followed by scales and arpeggios, then we work from a method book to address technique issues specific to clarinet. After that, we work on music such as etudes, solos, and ensemble parts for band or orchestra. I also enjoy helping students with pop and jazz pieces that they enjoy, so that they have variety in their practice and become well rounded musicians and can play many styles. Read More

I make my own lesson materials using musical notation software and cater the lesson to the needs of the student. Every student is different and requires special attention. For example, a beginner percussionist would start off learning how to read and notate rhythms all the way up to 16th notes to start. I would then move into how to hold drum sticks and how to hit a drum. I would build upon these concepts to facilitate lessons to come and tailor the lesson to the individual. Read More
