For beginning students, I typically use a combination of methods. For clarinet teaching, I like to use the Breeze-Easy method and also some materials from the Rubank method books. For intermediate or school-aged students, I like to supplement the material they are learning in school. I like to continue to use Rubank, Klose, and Rose books to continue to develop technique and musicality. My teaching experience dates back to 2019, when I would teach elementary and middle school students in my home in Maryland. I emphasize regular practice on a consistent schedule and to have a positive attitude when learning to play the clarinet. My students are encouraged to enter competitions, recitals, and auditions. I have produced students that have won auditions for Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras, been first chair of the Maryland State Honors Band, and have placed in state and region-wide music competitions! I like to get students as much into "the real world" as possible, so I push for getting students performing as much as they are learning. For beginning and intermediate clarinet and saxophone students I like using the Yamaha Advantage books or the Belwin Series. I like to use these lesson books and supplement with solo and duet material. I always encourage my students to bring in material they'd like to work on, from school band music to popular tunes they are intereseted in learning. I think it is important for all aspiring musicians to collaborate with others and make sure to play along with students in our lessons. I ask my students to plan their practice time each week, as I know how busy we all are! I recently graduated from Temple University with my Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance degree, where I studied with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and gained valuable knowledge about the fundamentals of exceptional clarinet playing, such as tone production, articulation, technique, and musicality. For teaching clarinet students who are beginners, I use the book authored by Texas Lutheran University clarinet professor, Paula Corley entitled "So You Want to Play the Clarinet". Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I usually move to the Rubank books because of their varied content. If the student is working with a school group, we will sometimes work on that repertoire, but improving technique in general is always my focus. Read More
