Generally, I find that students that can read music can understand music concepts a lot better that those that don't read music. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want. In some cases, I may not even use a method at all but I always write down the information students need so they can go home knowing how to practice and what to practice. Read More

I typically use a combination of methods in the private lesson setting-method books, etude books, books for technique, solo repertoire, and pop/rock/jazz music and or charts for contemporary study. For beginners, I like Essential Elements 2000, Faber Method, Suzuki solo books, and easy pop music books. For more advanced students, I will incorporate advanced methods such as etude books/orchestral excerpts along with repertoire geared more towards polishing for recital or performance. Read More

I started professionally teaching bass and guitar in high school. I still have all of my students that I started out with. Making sure that my students don't get bored during a lesson is my main goal. Most students don't practice what they were taught in a lesson if the lesson was boring. I make sure that all my students stay happy in the lesson and excited to learn new things. Read More

For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. For intermediate to advanced students I recommend books like "Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony" by Bert Ligon, "Fingerboard Harmony for Bass" by Gary Willis, "Funk Bass Fills" by Anthony Vitti, "The Latin Bass Book" by Oscar Stagnaro and "The Essential Jaco Pastorius" by Jaco Pastorius.
