I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. No one ever regrets learning music and I believe that often times when a student gives up on music it's because they are not taught in a way that is effective for them. A one approach fits all teaching style can cause students to loose interest and not practice which in turn leads them to get frustrated, bored and ultimately causing them to give up.
