I began teaching guitar very soon after I started performing myself. I had already had an extensive background on other instruments so the private lesson setting was second nature to me. In high school I taught many beginners and learned how to show younger students to build coordination between their fingers and the guitar while at the same time acquiring a large repertoire of songs that many students like to learn. My teaching style varies depending on the level of the student. For beginners, I often keep my approach lax and hope to not overwhelm them, as Ive seen many a beginner quit due to lack of confidence and understanding. Every student requires a different approach not just due to their skill level but also their personality. Certain students dont take criticism well, while others may only improve through it. I always try to be kind and understanding no matter where my students skill level or passion is at. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days when I began tutoring other students in 2001. After graduating in 2003 I transitioned to private lessons and have been teaching ever since. Regular practice on a consistent basis is one of the main points I emphasize to my students. It helps them progress and gain a passion for their instrument. A combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to continue learning. Read More

I started teaching at a small music store in Hollywood, Florida called The Banjo Shop. As the store specialized in Bluegrass music, I was hired to teach students the pop and rock songs being played at that time. I taught there for three years before relocating to North East Ohio. After taking some years off to raise a family I started teaching at GitterPicker String Factory in Twinsburg in 2005. In 2008 I opened my own music studio in Northfield, Ohio called the Olde 8 Guitar Studio and have been teaching ever since! Read More

My teaching style is straightforward and practical, always emphasizing the goals of each student specifically. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction. A good teacher's goal is to help the student advance, even if it doesn't happen in a pre-conceptualized fashion. Read More

I’m a great listener as I pointed out earlier. My musical strength has always been my ear. I’ve learned all major and minor scales with arpeggios through schooling and that’s great knowledge to have. I focus my teaching technique on scales and arpeggios to show that music heavily comprises of these fundamental elements. But I also teach students who want to learn by ear training and I teach students how to tune the instruments which is a major skill to have. Read More
