Teaching private music lessons to students of all ages and experience levels is a dynamic and rewarding endeavor that requires adaptability and a tailored approach. To begin, I start by assessing each student's individual goals, musical tastes, and prior experience. For beginners, I focus on building a strong foundation in music theory, basic techniques, and instrument proficiency. As students progress, I gradually introduce more complex concepts and repertoire suited to their interests and abilities. Read More

I have taught guitar since high school. I have had a ranging experience from teaching middle schoolers, to high schoolers, to adults. With each student, I assess where they are with their knowledge of the instrument, as well as how far their passion for music goes. In high school, I simply taught the fundamentals of the guitar as I knew it, making sure that my students played guitar correctly. As I grew musically and in my teaching methods, I understood that mixing in songs that my students knew into their lessons actually boosted the desire to play, and also made my job more efficient in conveying the reasons for good fundamentals while allowing a student to enjoy playing guitar. I am a fun-loving, passionate instructor who loves watching students experience the satisfaction of making progress and feeling accomplished. I have toured all over the U.S. performing with many great musicians such as Alasdair Fraser, Hanneke Cassel, Mari Black, and many others. I'm both proud and fortunate to have been featured numerous times on WGBH for "A Celtic Sojourn" with Brian O'Donovan. A regular night for me consists purely of doing what I love: playing music with friends at local bars or my own living room. Read More

I started my teaching career in 1996, teaching at the same music studio where I took lessons when I was younger. I try to carry some of the teaching techniques that were shown to me when I was taking lessons into my own style of teaching. This includes making the lesson fun as well as educational for the student. Daily practice is strongly encouraged, as well as playing with other musicians, recitals, and writing their own songs. I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. Read More

For younger beginning students, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course 1. For older children, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Guitar for Kids: Hal Leonard Guitar Method. Students are able to progress through the Suzuki Guitar Method through multiple volumes, or move through the Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Book 1 and continue through subsequent method books. For a classical guitar approach, I use the Suzuki Guitar Method, the Fredrick Noad Method Books, and the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Book. Read More

Each student learns at their own pace. Though I do have a consistent method for teaching, I first like to see what a student's level of playing and understanding of music is before we move forward so I can see where the student needs improvement. Although we will work on fundamentals, I work with students so that my lessons can be fun, educational, inspiring, and suited for each student's needs. Read More
