I tailor my curriculum to each student based on their learning style, skill level, interests, and goals. If the student is a beginner, we will start with fundamentals. I then create more rewarding lessons as soon as possible, working in the fundamentals in a more enjoyable and musical way. If the student is more advanced, we will work on pursuing their goals and filling in any gaps in their understanding. Read More

I began teaching lessons in college. Most of my early students were elementary-school aged and novice. There, I learned that regular practice must be encouraged to allow interest to begin to pique and passion begin to form. I firmly believe that hard work and discipline go much further than talent alone. I also firmly believe in fun! My most deeply seeded goal is for my students to develop a life-long love and practice of music! Read More

I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. As a performer, I've sung and played guitar in churches, clubs, local television and at weddings, funerals and I've perfomed in musicals alongside Broadway star Rebecca Luker in college. Read More

It is important that every student learns and improves at their own pace because everyone learns differently. So I break down songs and theory in to increments so that they can be more easily digested over time. I find that this method of learning is extremely helpful in the retention of the knowledge the student learns. Also not all students are interested in learning the same things so I think it is very important to find out what the student wants to learn and gain from playing music and what their expectations for themselves are. I follow the interests of the student and allow that to guide the direction of our study. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. This approach yields better results than forcing a student to stick to a certain method exclusively. I encourage students to divide their practice time into practicing fundamentals and technique, songs that teach them a certain concept or technique, and songs that they would like to perform or play for fun.
