For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration. I try to get my students playing music quickly, once they are playing and not just practicing it becomes fun.
