I like to lay a foundation for what musical notes are and how they relate to the instrument. If we're on guitar I will draw a piano keyboard and give the student the guitar string names and make them figure out the rest of the notes. Then I teach them what chords are and, now that they know their way around a fretboard, they can build the chords themselves. While most students aren't total beginners and won't need all of this groundwork to be laid by me, I've found that almost everyone has gaps in knowledge, more often than not when it comes to actual note names and the music theory behind the instrument. For piano beginning students who are children I typically start with Alfred Piano Method books and for guitar students will start with Mel Bay Guitar Level I .I work in dual teaching techniques Theory and performance .Student has to be familiar with reading the music notes to be able to play them on the instrument .Once the student has progress to have a grasp of the fundamentals in music theory and performance I will begin preparing them for their recitals and later on competitions . I try to focus more on technique and the physical approach to the instrument, with the bass being so large and cumbersome it is most important that students are treating their own bodies well! Musicality is also very important, I may ask my students to listen for the longer line within a peace. If they cannot find the larger phrase we can explore it together!
