After graduating from Rutgers University in 2001, I freelanced in the New York City area for 10 years and played with many of the worlds top jazz artists such as Grant Stewart, Frank Wess, Joel Frahm, Dr.Art Davis, Vic Juris, Ralph Peterson, Ralph Bowen, Orrin Evans, Sean Jones, and Gene Burtoncini. For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. Schaum's Music book as well as helping them to learn basic music theory in order to be able to keep time and know how to read music.  I help them to know their music scales so that they know them by heart when playing music.   I also inspire my students to join recitals in school as well as encourage them to practice daily as well as play with others. I teach the student as much as they can absorb while making sure they understand the material.I have never run out of material to teach.I teach proper technique and about scales because every song written is based on scales.I also work on songs with the student at the same time so they can see and understand how the songs and scales are used together.After the basics are understood we move on to songs the student wants to learn.I can also tailor lessons to a students wants or needs if desired.I have been doing this quite a while and understand what works.
