I don't take a one-size-fits-all-approach to my students. Children and adults have different needs. Even among children, the needs of a young child vary greatly from those of a teenager. I will use method books where appropriate, particularly with young children, but I've found that a more creative approach tends to lead to students having more fun, accomplishing more in the long run, and developing positive associations with learning a musical instrument. Honestly, it's up to the student. I have truly enjoyed teaching all kinds of music, and my students and I have had lots of success learning fun, easy, and challenging songs. This also includes the option for the student to learn the vocal melodies of these tunes! Lastly, I am able to provide students the opportunity to write their own songs. One of the first things I do with a the student is to let them play a bit for me so I can see the level they are at. I use for both the string bass and electric bass students the F.Simandl Method for string bass. There are also Etude books to follow and they include the 30 Etudes. I also adapt my teaching to each individual, allowing the student to make an emotional connection to what they are learning and to apply that emotionality back into their playing. I received a BM in Composition from SUNY Fredonia where I served on the executive board for Ethos New Music Society and taught private bass lessons to non-music majors. In May 2013, I was awarded the Ethos Laureate Prize in Composition for my chamber opera Randalls Leaf and, most recently, won Peabody's Macht Orchestra Composition Competition in 2015 forPillars, erased.
