For beginning players, there will be written work to teach aspects of music, including note identification. As students progress, incorporating technical aspects of a composition and different bowing techniques is necessary. We will gradually introduce more skills. Attempting too much at one time or too fast will reduce skills and cause frustration. I incorporate a mixture of All For Strings, Stringbuilder, and Suzuki for beginners. Some notable experiences I have had have been; playing in a classical quartet at the White House, playing fiddle in the bluegrass band at Cedar Point Amusement Park, playing electric violin with a country/rock band in Ohio and Kentucky, as well as participating in many orchestra tours throughout Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Sweden, and England. My initial lessons for all ages and levels begin with discussing expectations, motivations, and past experiences with music. Lessons should feel engaging fun, and productive. New players will learn fun ways to read music, feet positions, and hand exercises. Once a foundation is established, we'll learn more advanced skills and solo material. Beginners and intermediate players will always encounter scales and etudes as well as solo material just challenging enough to learn something new and fun enough they'll practice until they rock it. Since I have a variety of instruments and style I teach and since the needs of each student are different, I structure my materials and teaching methods for the individual. I particularly enjoy teaching beginners and young children. I've taught piano from many books including John Thompson books and Hal Leonard Series. Both my mother and grandmother were pianists and teachers.
