Whatever instrument private studies we are working on, a balanced approach of performance, literature, theory, and technique are studied. Once the groundwork is established, we even work through composition on their chosen instrument. Students work at their own pace. I have some students who move quite swiftly through their levels, and that is great. Others may need more time, and that is fine. I try to maintain organization and give my students goals to accomplish. In this, I aim to teach them how to create these goals for themselves, giving them a say in what they choose to work on. I will push a student in whichever direction they are aiming for. I maintain an attitude of positivity and try to encourage my students as much as possible. The key goal for me as a teacher is making sure that my student is enjoying what they're doing. Music is supposed to be fun after all! I achieve this by allowing my student to progress at their own pace while they develop both their knowledge of music and their enjoyment of the craft. I like to really dig into fundamentals by making sure that they are FUNdamentals! A student will learn more if they are enjoying the process, and that is key to making a long lasting impact, and instilling in a student that they will have all the tools they need to become the best musician they can. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials.
