My approach is simple - you tell me what your goals are and I help you achieve them. I can help with proficiency, timing, improvisation, technique, composition and am happy to go slowly or quickly. Some students do best with bi-weekly lessons. Others are better suited to weekly instruction. All students are taught how to break music down into simple terms which helps them approach music the right way. I typically create my own lesson plans and try to cater them to the student. Most recently I've been working with trying to find a balance of teaching music theory and practical piano. When teaching theory, I often refer to Kotska's and Payne's "Tonal Harmony" for the order of the curriculum, and when it comes to exercises I will either write them out on the spot to demonstrate something to the student (I also feel it is important to SHOW the student how to MAKE music, ie. proper note notation, and symbol shape), or prepare them in advance if the content is more complex. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I come from a diverse and varied musical environment. As the son of two professional musicians, I learned very early on the value of being a multi-instrumentalist. I continued on in Piano, Trumpet, and eventually guitar, all the way through college and beyond. I've been blessed with many different types of opportunities from playing weddings, to political events, fundraisers, and touring the country and internationally.
