I always start with the absolute foundation and fundamentals of music. I find when I start teaching students that have taken lessons previously, there are many holes in their understanding of their respective instrument and understanding of music in general. Consistency and steady progression is vital. What method books I recommend vary depending on the instrument and will be discussed prior to the first lesson. I encourage all students to come prepared with pencils, folder, staff paper and approved method book. Read More

Since then I have volunteered for my hometown's summer music enrichment program, and have continued to do one-on-one lessons. Outside of music I very often found myself in teaching scenarios. For several years I instructed WTF Taekwondo, holding a rank of 2nd Dan Black Belt. I also taught and assisted my mother in teaching Sunday school for several years. Throughout my years of teaching experience I've worked with all age ranges and levels of proficiency. Read More

I like to lay a foundation for what musical notes are and how they relate to the instrument. If we're on guitar I will draw a piano keyboard and give the student the guitar string names and make them figure out the rest of the notes. Then I teach them what chords are and, now that they know their way around a fretboard, they can build the chords themselves. While most students aren't total beginners and won't need all of this groundwork to be laid by me, I've found that almost everyone has gaps in knowledge, more often than not when it comes to actual note names and the music theory behind the instrument. My teaching style involves tailoring my lessons to each student's specific needs with an emphasis on ear-training and proper instrument technique. I like to get going on music that moves the student as quickly as possible, so we will use music that is of high interest to the student to develop the ear, learn a bit of theory, and put in the work that will allow the student to really unlock their instrument. I consider my teaching style to be comprised of two major components - physical and mental. The physical component includes things like picking, strumming, finger strength, finger dexterity, and left hand/right hand coordination. For this, I provide a variety of exercises which do not necessarily require musical knowledge. These can be taught at any time, but are especially valuable early in a student's learning path. They are also effective warm-up exercises before practice and before performances. Read More
