I tailor my lessons to meet each student's individual needs. I work to balance the time between challenging exercises they may struggle with, and fun playing they can enjoy and excel at. I frequently discuss goals with students, such as "we will work towards being about to play 8 measures without taking a breath" or "within two months we will be able to comfortably play up to high-C." I like to sit with my students and have them learn about the parts of the instrument as well as getting to know their instrument. At the end of each year, there will be a final studio recital where each student will get to perform a piece they have worked on during the year to ensure they get a chance to have formal performance experience. I teach half hour lessons and instruct the student on good reading habits, how to practice and perform, encouraging them to bring in any supplemental music they are working on at school or on the internet. The importance of practice cannot be over emphasized, nor can the encouragement (nagging!!) Of an interested parent. A student cannot learn an instrument just by coming to lessons. If the students have music from classes in school, I will also assist them with that. I try to keep the lesson light, and enjoyable!
